TOUSHINGAMA

Based in Yachimun Village in Yomitan, Okinawa, Toushingama is led by nationally recognized traditional craftsman Masakazu Soma and specializes in the Tsuboya-yaki style—the foundation of Yachimun. The studio seamlessly blends tradition with modernity, using locally sourced materials, including Okinawan red clay and handcrafted glazes made from local ingredients.

Toushingama believes that Yachimun is a collaborative creation between people and nature, born from Okinawa's soil, trees, and wind. It's a process that transcends human effort alone. When the potter kindles the kiln, they say a prayer, "Umarashimiso-re" (please be born), entrusting everything to the fire god and hoping with all their heart for a safe and successful outcome. It's a moment filled with faith and tradition, reflecting the deep connection between the craftsman and the spirit of the nature god.
